Ran College XC and more or less hated it.  Now run for fun and personal punishment.

Running my first marathon with Dean Karnazes and Pam Reed got me this idea that Ultra-running would be tons of fun.

End of the week and a run in the early evening.  This is a good time to run, I think.  I am very awake and can run pretty hard.  There is a 20 mile training run at Universal Sole the first weekend in March that I am contemplating participation.  There is also the 50K one month later.  I think I can get both done and taper back off for the late spring before I build again into the fall.  It might be a nice learning experience to have two significant runs in the spring rather than just the bulk of my long training in the fall.  We'll see if it works with my schedule.

This was a good hard run.  I stopped at 3 1/2 miles to grab some groceries and hit it really hard all the way home.  Kind of beautiful out.  Heavy, heavy fog gave the tarnished snow a mysterious story-book appearance.  I am going to miss these winter runs in two months when the trails get packed again.

Man oh Man! What a run today. Driving snow and bitter cold. I wanted to quit so badly. Kept having to tell myself to relax and not worry. Did not pass another runner on the path. I think that might be a first for me in Chicago. This could have partly been due to the time at which I ran as well as the cold. I was passed by the lakefront snow plow guy three times. This is what it's all about, I guess. Running when you really hate it. And to think, I've only just begun.  PS  My mother is considering a half-marathon this year.  Foolishly reading part of Dean Karnazes book, she is a little inspired.  I have to say, the thought of her training for that was certainly inspiring to me at moments out there today.

Had just a few minutes this afternoon and wanted to make sure I got in some running time.  I plan on running 7 tomorrow so I thought I would take it easy today.  The weather was decent and my run was pretty fast.  It's nice to go out saying, "I'm just going to run a couple of miles."  I still feel pretty great about how this is going.

7 miles: 52:52:29

7:32 average pace

I ran this a lot faster than I planned.  In looking at these long runs I want to make sure that I don't go out too hard too often.  There's, needless to say, a ton of miles left and I want to finish all of them strong.  However, once I got going, everything felt pretty good and it seemed like I was accelerating through the run.  Now, 7 miles isn't a very big deal but it is the longest run of the year thus far.  I'm pretty happy with it.

Cold, cold, cold, cold, cold!  When I woke up this morning it was -3.  I ran this at about 12:30 and I have no idea how cold it was but the first mile and a half were pretty bitter.  However, I stopped at just over the midway point and stretched a little and then cruised the last mile and a half.  Sometimes I forget that these miles are for me.  Sometimes I forget that I can take it easy and enjoy myself.  Sometimes I forget that not going full speed on a daily run WILL NOT determine whether or not I will finish a 100 mile race.

Not so cold today.  Low 30s is a nice break from what we've had lately.  I could stand a day of 50 degree weather sometime, though.  I realize we probably won't taste much of that until March.  The legs feel pretty good.  I guess I was running about this much training for my first marathon but it was indoors and on a treadmill.  I also did not have a weekend long run like I have every other week now.  Apparently mother is really going for this half-marathon.  That's pretty exciting.

I've been reading about night running to train for these events.  I went out at about 7:00, not late at all mind you, and it definitely reminded me of why running at the end of the day and through the night is important to training.  It's a little stranger, your body is a little weaker and your mind is a little less sharp when you are running in the dark.  It was 18 degrees-feels like 10 when I left tonight.  That didn't help either.  I was also flying going out and hit a nasty northwest wind coming home that really took its toll.  Interesting run but a good week.

So cold and I'm over it.  It doesn't look as though it's going to get warm anytime soon, however.  Hopefully by Saturday since I am planning an eight miler.

So, I ran pretty hard to get my heart rate up for some push-ups and sit-ups and other workout.  I know I need to add more upper body work to my regiment.

7:14 average.  Pretty fast eight miles.  It was in the twenties but I was determined to wear shorts today.  The sun was out and I enjoyed the majority of the run.

I was very sore when I started the run from my workout yesterday and a long day of rehearsal.  I stopped and stretched briefly at my turnaround and that felt great.  Making a mid-run stretch a consistent part of my regiment has been great.

It's now the end of week 8 and I move up another level in my training.  I was on a 12/17 alternating week but now move, I think, to a 15/20 mile week for the next four.  We'll see how that goes!
